A BAG FOR CHANGE

At H&M South Africa, every paper shopping bag purchase helps support local community programmes through our A Bag for Change initiative. Through this initiative, 50% of the proceeds from every shopping bag sold are donated to selected non-profit organisations.

This year, H&M South Africa is donating R1 million to Star for Life, an organisation working with young people in South Africa through school-based programmes focused on life skills, confidence, self-leadership, entrepreneurship, gender equality and violence prevention.

The donation builds on H&M South Africa’s previous support of Star for Life and helps fund the organisation’s Daughters of Africa Girls Clubs at selected schools in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, and the introduction of a Boys Club in the Western Cape. Led by registered social workers, the Girls and Boys Club workshops give learners the opportunity to discuss harmful norms, strengthen decision-making skills and build healthy attitudes and behaviours.

H&M South Africa’s support also contributes to the work of Star for Life GBV Champion Londiwe Nyawo, who leads awareness campaigns, prevention programmes, survivor support and advocacy. Together with Star for Life, H&M South Africa aims to help create more opportunities for young people to learn, grow and take part in building safer, more equal communities.
